Tom Riley has landed the lead in one-off crime drama Dark Heart.

The Da Vinci’s Demons and Monroe star will play DI Will Wagstaffe, a man haunted by his past, in the ITV Encore show.

Charlotte Riley and Miranda Raison will also appear in the programme, which has been penned by acclaimed writer Chris Lang and is based on the novel Suffer The Children by Adam Creed.

DI Will Wagstaffe is at London City airport when his colleague DC Josie Chancellor (Anjli Mohindra) calls him to tell him there’s been a gruesome murder.

Wagstaffe, along with DC Chancellor, DS Dave Pulford (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) and DS Rick Johnson (Tom Brooke), are confronted by a horrific scene – Ray Collins (Mark Fleischmann), a man in his mid thirties, has been tied to his own bed, choked and severely mutilated.

Miranda will play the policeman’s on-off love interest while Charlotte will star as his sister.

Kate Bartlett, ITV Studios, said: “Chris Lang has written a truly compelling and atmospheric script.

“Adam Creed created a fascinating character in Will Wagstaffe with so many layers, and Chris has brilliantly brought him to screen. We’re thrilled that Tom Riley is playing him.”

The drama, which is being shot in and around London, was commissioned for ITV by Controller of Drama Victoria Fea.

“As Will Wagstaffe investigates gruesome crimes it’s hard to believe that his personal life could be as complex as his day job, but as we get to know Staffe we realise he’s utterly haunted by his past,” she said.

“Viewers will be left guessing not only who is behind the murders that Staffe is investigating, but also wondering what history lies behind Wagstaffe’s family.”
