Grand Theft Auto V is with us – which is cause for celebration, of course. But there’s also some space for reflection.

After all, this was a series borne from a small, Edinburgh-based development team which had seen a few too many car chases on the news.

From its humble, adorably violent origins, the GTA series is now all-conquering – selling in the millions and bringing with it a marketing juggernaut the likes of which no other game has seen - not even Call of Duty.

So we thought we’d look back at the main entries to the series – though special mention should go to Vice City Stories, Chinatown Wars et al – and see how GTA has evolved since it began in 1997.

One thing’s for sure - every single one of the games is still a lot of fun to play, as we found out while making this video.
