    Update, Monday August 5

Toys R Us contacted BT Games on Friday to clarify their earlier statement, confirming the dates were in fact not official and are guesses. The new statement said:

"Please accept my sincerest apologies for the incorrect information you were given yesterday regarding the Xbox One and Playstation 4 Console official release dates.

"The release dates are not provided by either Microsoft or Sony, but are an estimated date and are required by our system to allow us to take pre-orders. Once the correct launch dates are officially provided we will update our web site and contact any customers who have ordered."

We have maintained the original story below for the sake of transparency. Plus, to be fair, December 13 did seem a bit too late to be bringing out a console.

    Original Story

The Xbox One will release on November 29, with the PS4 following on December 13, it has been confirmed to BT Games.

A spokesperson for Toys R Us, which had listed the dates for the next-gen consoles, confirmed the dates were accurate and direct from suppliers.

We contacted the store yesterday for clarification on the two releases, asking if the November and December time frames were ‘accurate, or just a best-guess scenario’. The email response simply stated:

“I can confirm this information has been given direct from our suppliers and is accurate.”

Microsoft and Sony have so far remained quiet on the subject, though we have contacted both for comment.

It should be emphasised that this is a date from a retailer, not either platform holder, and misinformation is a possibility.

This piece will be updated to reflect any response received.

Sony has responded, stating: "We haven't made any announcements other than coming this holiday season."

    UPDATE 2

Microsoft has also responded, with a spokesperson stating:

"We have announced that Xbox One will launch this November, but have not shared any further details. It’s common practice for retailers to use placeholder dates for pre-order items without an official launch date. Please stay tuned to, where we share the latest official details about all things Xbox One."
