Former Holland, Manchester United and Real Madrid striker extraordinaire Ruud van Nistelrooy has announced his return to football. Sort of.

The Dutchman makes his comeback after two years out of the game as part of EA Sports’ promotion for Fifa 14’s Ultimate Team Legends mode, which is available for Xbox consoles.

Van Nistelrooy joins a legends line-up which already features fellow Oranje stars Denis Berkgamp, Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten as well as Paolo Maldini, Luis Figo, and England internationals Gary Lineker, Michael Owen and Gary Neville.

You can see Van Nistelrooy’s first ‘press conference’ above and visit the Play Like a Legend site it all ties into for more information.

Players of Fifa 14 on Xbox can build teams of footballing greats and take part in weekly challenges to win all manner of prizes. Sadly none of the rewards – which include in-game coins, Xbox One consoles and more – involve being able to sign Van Nistelrooy for your local club.

We found Fifa 14 to be another great entry in the long-running series, mixing arcade-style fun and simulation-like aspects to great effect.

Even if you’re not bothered about Ruud’s faux-comeback, it might still be worth picking the game up – though only on Xbox if you want to play with legends and win prizes.
