Think of an embarrassing dad look and he’s probably wearing a Hawaiian shirt, socks with sandals and high-waisted yet loose jeans.

Badly put together or perfectly on trend? Funnily enough, he’s about as fashionable as they come – especially for women.

Debenhams have even seen an increase of 68% in sales of socks and sandals while sales of brightly patterned short-sleeve shirts have soared by 72%.

Yes, fashion’s gone rogue and become comfortable for summer.

But let’s face it, you don’t want to go out looking like your Dad on his jollies in Benidorm or worse, your husband down in Margate last week, so we’ve pulled together a few insider tricks to fashioning up an embarrassing Dad’s wardrobe.

Socks with sandals

The Dad way: Tonal socks worn with sensible sandals, worn under bootcut stonewash jeans. Bruce Willis hits it spot on.
The fashion way: Jazz it up. Pop a contrasting pair of socks under your pool sliders (Birkenstocks will also do). If you’re not quite as brave as Rita Ora, try a pared-down version of the look with boyfriend fit jeans and ankle socks.

Hawaiian shirts

Michael Douglas and Whitney Port wear Hawaiian shirts

The Dad way: Unbuttoned with a vest underneath, like Michael Douglas.
The fashion way: There are two ways to wear a Hawaiian shirt; either button a fitted one up all the way as Whitney Port has done and wear in place of a smart shirt, or try an oversized version as an unusual summer cover-up.

Jeans

The Dad way: A classic fit would be slightly high on the waist with a slim yet loose fit, modelled by Hugh Bonneville.
The fashion way: OK, so you don’t want to wear men’s denim but the female equivalent of these mirror the fit of the ‘Mom’ jeans, which have sent the fash-pack into a frenzy. If you’ve still got yours from the 90s, dig them out! The belly-button-grazing, loosely tapered fit screams now; we love how January Jones has teamed hers with a patterned shirt and no-nonsense loafers. Roll up the hem for extra style points.

Bermuda shorts

The Dad way: Only at the beach. We particularly love Mel Gibson’s ode to a faded 90s pattern, so true of most men’s Bermuda shorts.
The fashion way: Rejoice as bum cheek-bearing shorts are out and long, slouchy shorts are in. Keep the whole look loose with oversized shirts, boyfriend-fit blazers and peasant-style tops in matching shades or prints - we love Solange's H&M pairing. Silk, leather or suede fabrics are particularly pleasing.
