A smoky eye is a hard make-up technique to master – and even Victoria Beckham fell into its pitfalls at a swanky gala.

The Spice Girl’s heavily applied eyeshadow and uber pale lips were a shocking beauty statement from the normally polished and pristine fashion designer.

Stepping out with husband David Beckham to an Alexander McQueen gala, where Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Poppy Delevingne partied the night away, VB’s smudged eyeliner and dark eyeshadow was a stark contrast to her nude lips and pared back skin.

Some beauty insiders drew comparisons between her look and one worn by Natalie Portman in Black Swan while others commented on how drawn and tired it made her look.

Where did it all go wrong? Poor Posh’s problem lies in how high up she took her eyeshadow, which almost seemed to bleed into her full-on, dark brows. Couple that with the wide-winged liner and pale lips and skin – which almost blend into one - and the overall effect is gaunt rather than gorgeous.

So you don’t make the same mistakes as Victoria, we asked Helen Hand, who is Lorraine Kelly’s go-to make-up guru, to show you how to do a smoky eye the right way.

So line up your eyeshadows, dust down your brushes and get your smoke on.
