We’re frequently told that eating well, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly are the best ways to stay healthy, live longer, and avoid developing nasty diseases, including the ‘big C’ – cancer.

But here are some other nifty and surprising ways to help boost your wellbeing too, so you’ll be less susceptible to – and more able to fight off – cancer:

1. Get married

The Cancer Prevention Institute of California found that men who are single and have cancer are 27% more likely to die than their married counterparts, and female cancer patients are 19% more like to die than women who are hitched.

So saying ‘I do’ isn’t just financially beneficial, the researchers found that it was the emotional support that marriage provides that made all the difference.

3. Laugh lots

5. Avoid microwaving

There are always rumours that microwaves zap the goodness out of whatever goes into them, but a Spanish study really has found that, in the case of broccoli, microwaving the green brassica can lead to it losing 97% of its cancer-protective flavonoids. Steam it instead to keep all that goodness intact.

6. Have sex

Sex technically counts as exercise, so you’ll be ticking several boxes when you jump into bed: reducing stress, releasing happy endorphins, working multiple muscle groups and boosting general wellbeing.

7. Ban scented candles

Scented candles might smell nice, but they can in fact add to the air pollution in your home, as can air fresheners and cleaning products. Air your home as often as possible (open doors and windows) for fresher, not-so chemical filled air.

8. Turn the light off

Artificial light can wreak havoc, particularly for shift workers – it’s been linked with higher rates of prostate and breast cancer. To minimise effects, scientists have advised sleeping in total darkness – either using blackout blinds or an eye mask to really block out any light – which can boost the body’s production of cancer fighting melatonin.

9. Don’t char grill

Who doesn’t love a barbecue? Next time you fire yours up though, be sure to marinate your meat first. The American Institute for Cancer Research has found that a good marinade can limit the amount of carcinogenic chemicals that are released when the meat hits the flames.
