The world was first introduced to the outspoken and enigmatic Kim Zolciak back in 2008 as one of the original Real Housewives of Atlanta.
The most popular of all the Real Housewives franchises, we’ve since seen Kim on the show go from a single wig loving mum-of-two (daughters Brielle and Ariana) and dating a mysterious “Big Poppa” to marrying professional American footballer Kroy Biermann in 2011, having four children with him (Kash, Kroy and twins Kaia and Kane) and starring in her own reality spin-off, Don’t Be Tardy, that’s about to premiere its sixth season.
Kim is due to return to The Real Housewives of Atlanta this November for their 10th anniversary season.
On top of all this, she’s a dance chart-topping songstress with hits such as “Tardy for the Party”, and for the last year has headed her own skincare business Kashmere Kollections.
So how does she manage it all? “With the help of a lot of wine, honey!” Kim teases down the phone from her sprawling Atlanta mansion that’s heavily featured in Don’t be Tardy.
However, it hasn’t always been happy times for Kim as back in 2015 she suffered a stroke, forcing her to drop out of competing on Dancing with the Stars. She says going through such a shocking health scare has helped her put things in perspective and stop being a perfectionist.
“I am such a perfectionist and think the stroke was a perfect reflection of that," Kim said. "I was trying to be the perfect competitor on Dancing with the Stars, be the perfect mother, the perfect wife, but now I have to look at my list in the morning and think I will do what I can do today and the rest will have to wait until tomorrow.
"I don’t get stressed out now if I forget something or something slips through. I am definitely a lot more laidback now than I was!”
And there has also been her four-year-old son’s dramatic dog bite this year, which almost cost him his sight in one eye, a story which will be closely covered in the upcoming Don’t Be Tardy series.
Kim said: “This season is a really amazing one, there are many highs and definitely a low in the situation – of course there is the situation with my son Kash, being bitten by a dog, dealing with that, which was definitely very trying."
As any Kim fan will know, she relies heavily on the teachings of The Secret, made famous by the book of the same name written by Rhonda Bryne, and she says this has helped her get through some very challenging times over the years.
“We all have bad days but I have to remind myself to have gratitude and that you can’t expect negative thoughts will lead to a positive life.
"I was first introduced to The Secret over 10 years ago by a spiritual counsellor when I was pregnant with Ariana and going through an absolutely horrible divorce. I connected to this woman and she explained to me the 'Ask, Believe, Receive' model and that you are responsible for your thoughts. I realised that life was great and it turned a very bad situation into a good one for me. I realised I had Ariana and a great life ahead of me.”
We’ve also seen her frequent “Grandma Rose”, a psychic palm reader in both of her shows, who accurately predicted the births of each of her four last children. Kim says she still sees her all the time.
“I joke with Kroy that I’d love to have another baby and I ask Grandma Rose about it all the time! I love her and I’ve always been very into this kind of thing but ultimately I have to take it with a grain of salt!”
As for any rumours out there that her marriage could be on the rocks, she laughs this off and says they’re doing fine.
“I always say the secret to a healthy marriage is sex, sex and more sex! Communication is key. I always make Kroy a priority, listen to him. We know each other well enough to know what irritates one another, what makes us happy, we are heavily invested in our relationship. We make sure the kids are in bed every night by 8pm which gives us plenty of alone time.”
What's next for the reality TV star? In addition to her hit shows, Kim’s skin collection Kashmere Kollections is going from strength to strength and she has a few other projects in the pipeline.
Kim adds: “I started Kashmere Kollections just over a year ago, it’s a multimillion dollar company and we’ve got close to 200 employees. I just can’t believe how far it has come already…I’ve got a book coming out soon and I have a bathing suit line coming out for bigger busted women because I can never fit into my bathing tops! But of course, above all I’m a mom and my kids will definitely always take precedent.”
