Decorating the tree is an enjoyable ritual, but that doesn't mean this seasonal focal point has to look the same every year.

Read on for six tips, from interior designer Joanna Wood, to transform your tired tree into a showstopper:

  1. By all means rely on that cherished collection of favourite Christmas decorations, there’s no need to rush out and buy a completely new set, but simply adding a few pieces can bring a new look to life.

  2. Bring your tree to life by varying the style and texture of baubles and ornaments when decorating. There’s no reason why shiny smooth baubles can’t be mixed with berry garlands or rustic white decorations.

  3. An important rule when dressing your Christmas tree is don't skimp on lights, and always put them on first so you can then hang the baubles around them

  4. Remember to create height and depth by thinking carefully about the placement of your decorations and vary hanging positions - they can be tied to the tips of trees or sit on top of branches, as well as hanging from them.

  5. To fill in gaps, and make your tree look beautifully festive, use groups of three gold baubles, rather than just one on the end of each branch. Tie these baubles together with cotton ribbon to keep them perfectly in place.

  6. Position your base decorations (smaller baubles, those in neutral tones or decorations you have a few of) on the tree first and once you’re happy with the spread of these, arrange your larger and more glitzy decorations onto the branches.
