As you savour a well-earned cup of coffee, why not think about making that delicious aroma last a little longer by creating some sweet and savoury coffee dishes?
If you're coffee-crazy and want to eat the stuff as well as drink it, here are eight ideas to help that morning coffee rush last all day.
1. Smoky Black Bean Soup
Two cups of brewed coffee add a toasty background note to this hearty bean soup, which can be vegetarian, or add ham hock for a smoky, salty ham flavour.
2. Coffee-Rubbed Rib Eye Steak
Spices, mustard and brown sugar are mixed with two tablespoons of finely-ground coffee beans to create a rub which is pressed into the steak to coat it before searing and then roasting, to create an irresistible and unusual flavour.
3. Brewed and Braised Cherry Chicken
The dried cherries and fennel in this quirky recipe add a nice contrast to the bitterness of the finely ground beans, which are rubbed into the chicken pieces to marinate them for a few hours, before baking in a coffee, chicken stock, balsamic vinegar, fennel and cherry mixture.
4. Coffee & Beer Chilli
Coffee and beer give this thick and spicy chilli a unique flavour – and there's even a sprinkling of cocoa in the mountains of ingredients in this recipe.
5. Irish Coffee Brownies
These chewy, but crispy on the outside, brownies are rich, delicious and very indulgent, giving you your shot of coffee through two tablespoons of instant granules and up to four tablespoons of brewed coffee, together with cocoa powder, vanilla, walnuts, and, of course, a few good glugs of Irish whisky. Delicious!
6. Blueberry Coffee Crumble Cake
Simon Rimmer's light blueberry cake contains a double-dose of coffee, with strong espresso mixed with fresh blueberries and lemon in the cake mixture, and instant coffee powder as well as cinnamon, butter, flour and sugar in the crunchy crumble topping. This one will definitely give you a shot of caffeine!
7. Coffee and Chocolate Pudding
This is a self-saucing pudding, with little ramekins topped with a strong coffee, sugar and cocoa sauce that thickens on standing after baking. It contains enough coffee to add to the richness of the dessert, without being overpowering.
8. Mocha Cheesecake Bars
Filled with coffee flavour, these creamy cheesecake bars feature a crust of crushed chocolate cream biscuits and hot fudge, topped with a filling of coffee, cream cheese, soured cream and dark chocolate.
