The iconic Volkswagen Kombi is no more. It’s been called many things over the decades – Camper, Transporter, Microbus – but after half a century on our roads, production at its Brazilian factory has ended after churning out more than a million units since 1957.
And while the Kombi’s shape has changed quite a bit in those years, it remains instantly recognisable wherever you are in the world. One of the few vehicles to generate universal appeal, it’s been pressed into service as everything from an ambulance to a mobile home.
The surfer cliché might be the most well known of all the lifestyles associated with the Kombi, but this venerable old bus has also cut through the automotive class system and has been embraced by people from all walks of life.
And while it’s a little long and sentimental, this Volkswagen-produced movie serves as a fitting farewell for a vehicle that has rightfully earned its place in motoring history.
