If you adore the freedom of riding a motorcycle, there’s often nothing better than experiencing that love of the open road in some of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world.

That’s what The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus does in new travel documentary series Ride with Norman Reedus, in which he takes a trip to a different city or country in six weekly one-hour episodes.

And as well as taking viewers on the open road with a different riding companion each week, Reedus explores motorcycle culture and its history, and celebrates some of the best collectors, mechanics and motorcycle craftsmen in the US.

The second series visits locations including Spain, South Carolina, California, New Mexico, Hawaii and New York.

But while Reedus gives biking enthusiasts a taste of America’s open roads, there are plenty more fantastic journeys to be ridden worldwide.

Here are a few of them:

Rides to do before you die

The Iron Chef, aka biker Warren Mallett, writes the blog Motorcycle Paradise.  He includes these three in his must do rides before you die:

1. Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia is known for its beauty and mix of Canadian, French and Scottish ancestry. Cabot Trail combines this with curvy roads with wonderful vistas.

2. Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

Cameron Highlands is a mountainous area of Malaysia that boasts some of the best riding roads in Asia. The hilltops are lush green with tea plantations, and you can base yourself in one of the region’s many hotels while exploring.

3. Rota Romantica, Brazil

One of the best rides in Brazil, the ‘Romantic Route’ is a 184km scenic road that winds through the Rio Grande do Sul from Sao Leopoldo to Sao Francisco de Paula, taking you through wooded hills, vineyards, canyons with waterfalls and scenic bluffs.

4. Ride on the Roof of the World

A 14-day Himalayan bike tour into the Roof of the World, visiting Tibet, Lhasa and Kathmandu.

With every turn on the antique Silk Road there are stunning views of the Himalayas, lakes, monasteries and nomadic settlements, before reaching Everest Base Camp.

5. African dream

Unique fly-ride motorcycle tours to South Africa are offered by HC Travel. There are more than 20 spectacular mountain passes within a day’s ride of Cape Town, vast empty beaches, cliff roads, deserts, and the winelands - an ever-changing landscape of shapes and colours.

And of course there’s Cape Town itself, recently voted the fourth best city in the world to visit.
Guided group motorcycle tours are available, on either BMW or Harley-Davidson motorcycles, or motorcycle hire to explore the Cape on your own can be arranged.

6. European road trip

If you don’t want to go quite so far afield, Ride With Us Tours offers self-guided motorcycle tours of Europe. Its Grand European tour, which starts and ends in Milan, Italy, takes riders through some of the most spectacular scenery of seven European countries including the Champagne region of France, the Black Forest of Germany, the Austrian Tyrol, Slovenian lakes, Croatian coast, Italian Dolomites and the Swiss Alps. You’ll stay in four star hotels for 13 nights, with a route pack for each day.
