With the weather surely only getting worse until next year, it is little wonder that some of us are thinking about using our Christmas break to try and get a second shot at summer abroad.

Here are some of the best getaways around to catch some winter sunshine…

1. Byron Bay, Australia

A good alternative to Bondi – the town’s relaxed pace of life is matched by its comparatively cheap accommodation costs.

The town has lots of activities to keep your family busy – from surf schools to circus courses, you won't fail to find yourself entertained.

2. Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Achingly beautiful, Koh Phi Phi's white beaches and clear seas have made it a favourite amongst pleasure seekers, who also come to the island for its wild nightlife.

However, there's still plenty to do here if you don't fancy staying up all night; water sports, sunset tours and exploring the jungles are all viable options.

3. Havana, Cuba

The city perfectly summarises the two conflicting personalities Cuba embodies; on one hand, Havana has vibrant energy and beautiful squares to explore – on the other, it is not without its seedy underbelly.

Temperatures reach as high as 27 degrees in December, so for a unique alternative to a winter beach holiday, Cuba is well worth a try.

Cancun is famous for Spring breakers, but its party vibes and hot summer-like weather is apparent all year round.

Downtown Cancun is for the more refined tourist, having developed a new and edgy arts scene, which hosts several free open-air events.

5. Mauritius

Much like Australia, Mauritius enjoys an inverted weather pattern to the UK, with its hottest period stemming between November and April.

Deep-sea fishing and scuba diving are popular on the island at these times of the year.

6. Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Warm all year round, Lanzarote is no longer solely known as a party island.

Whilst there is still plenty here for the night-time hedonist to enjoy, Lanzarote is now also a haven of relaxed pleasures, with wine tasting at La Geria, cycling and swimming great ways to pass the time.

7. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the perfect holiday destination for the eager adventurer.

Highlights include the Yala National Park Adventure from Galle, a safari tour that allows you to catch a glimpse of some of the country's exotic wildlife, and the Galle Whale Watching Cruise – where visitors can spot several species of whale and even the occasional dolphin.

8. California, USA

For those with kids, California is an ideal winter holiday choice purely for its vast array of theme parks; Disneyland California, Universal Studios and LEGOLAND to name a few.

If you want a real injection of winter sun, Death Valley National Park is a must-see.

9. Brazil

The host of this year's Olympic Games, the carnival spirit of Rio de Janeiro can be felt all year round.

Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer are two of the most beautiful and breathtaking sites to see, but for those of you who have extra time on your hands, it is well worth booking the two hour flight to see the majestic Iguazu Falls.

10. Maldives

The average temperature of this tropical region is as high as 27 degrees, even in November, so you'll be guaranteed sunshine regardless of when you visit.

The Old Friday Mosque is a site of historical beauty, but the Manta Reef and Hammerhead Point, where you can view turtles and sharks, respectively, are outstanding.

11. South Africa

Cape Town may be one of the main tourist spots in South Africa – unsurprisingly, considering the views from the Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain National Park – but the Kruger National Park's safari tour is a must see.

Sunny all year round, Costa Rica is ideal for that elusive winter tan.

White-water rafting, wildlife watching and the hot springs are must-do activities.

13. Seychelles

The perfect summer holiday at Christmas, visiting the Seychelles is ideal for those who just want to lie around and do nothing.

Anse Lazio, with its crystal clear water and sandy white beach is a slice of paradise, where you can also spot turtles and seagulls enjoying the weather.

If you're looking for both hot weather and Christmas cheer, look no further than Florida, which puts a range of festive events on from October, including Winterfest and Santa's Enchanted Forest to name a few.

15. Cyprus

The consistently hottest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus offers long, warm and dry days over the winter months. At an average temperature of around 20 degrees, Cyprus may be one of the cooler destinations on the list, but for so cheap and so close, you can't go far wrong.

16. Marrakech, Morocco

Reaching highs of the mid-twenties in the winter, Marrakech's rich history and markets means there's plenty to see and do.

To fully soak up the souk atmosphere, spend a day observing the sites, sounds and smells.
