If you think shopping on holiday means picking up a few questionable souvenirs and a bottle of something local in the duty-free, think again.

Shopping holidays are big business and there’s a city or location to suit your shopping tastes, from luxe local designers to bargain basement.

Expedia has released its top 25 cities for shopping, rated for their value for money, friendliness and number of visitors.

Here we take a look at the top six in more detail. Which one will you visit?

1. New York

Voted number one for its “limitless shopping options”, the Big Apple is a shopper’s paradise with some of the world’s biggest department stores, like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, an eclectic mix of local boutiques, and bargains to be had on big brands like Levi’s, Nike and Marc Jacobs.

2. Berlin

If you like quirky pieces and niche shops, the German capital has a huge array to choose from. It doesn’t have a definite shopping zone so it’s best to explore by foot.

3. Los Angeles

Head to downtown LA for the LA Fashion District and you won’t go far wrong. If you’ve saved a lot of dollars and fancy rubbing shoulders with the stars, then Rodeo Drive and Robertson Boulevard are the spots for you.

4. London

London’s been a mecca for shoppers from all around the world for years. Why? Because whatever your sartorial style or budget, you’ll find an area of London that has just what you’re looking for.

5. Kuala Lumpur

Diverse and vibrant, Kuala Lumpur was ranked as one of the cheapest for shopping. As well as designer names, there’s an abundance of independent stores and stalls full of local treats.

6. Tokyo

Bright, buzzing and ultra-modern, shopping here will be like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. What’s more, the city manages to fuse traditional with high tech in a way no other city can.
