In the UK, one in five children and one in 12 adults suffers from eczema. Sometimes known as dermatitis, eczema is a dry skin condition, with varying degrees of severity.
Eczema can be managed by keeping skin moisturised with emollient products such as Aveeno Moisturising Cream – unscented and packed with natural active oats. This routine can reduce the frequency of flare-ups.
For more ways to keep in control of your eczema follow GP Dr Rob Hicks’ top tips
- Avoid bathing too often - this can strip the skin of its protective oils. Take extra care when towel drying, pat gently rather than rub to reduce irritation.
- When you do bathe, ensure bath/shower water is lukewarm rather than hot. Using hot water will irritate and dry out the skin.
Keep nails short to cause less damage through a particularly itchy episode, or if you scratch in your sleep.
- Avoid wool and synthetic clothing, stick to cotton as much as possible as it allows the skin to breathe and prevents overheating, especially while sleeping.
