Still or fizzy, we can all appreciate the clean, refreshing taste of water and the need to keep our bodies hydrated.
But according to a recent study, nearly four million Brits haven’t had a glass of water in more than a week, with 52% of us reaching for tea or coffee instead.
“Water is the healthiest way to hydrate; it energises us, aids digestion and weight loss and improves the complexion, to name just a few of the benefits,” says GP Dr Ellie Cannon.
“Despite this, many people are drinking far less than they should and their health could be suffering as a result.”
The survey, conducted by SodaStream, also revealed that 38% of Brits think water is boring and almost a third say they ‘need caffeine more than water’.
Fiona Hope, managing director of Sodastream UK, says: “The perception that water is boring isn’t necessarily surprising, but it’s worrying to see the extent people are neglecting such a vital part of their diet.”
So if you know you should be drinking more water but aren’t that keen on the prospect, try one of these easy tips…
Put the wow into water
“Make your water a little bit more exciting – add cucumber or a slice of orange/lemon for extra flavour,” says Shona Wilkinson, Head Nutritionist at NutriCentre.
“You can also increase your water intake by adding fruit and vegetables which are packed with water your diet – like cucumber, celery, watermelon and strawberries.”
A steep in the right direction
“Try adding natural flavours to your drinking water,” advises Wilkinson. “Steep flavoursome and fragrant things in it – for at least two hours – and you’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes.”
She suggests experimenting with the following fun flavours…
• Fresh herbs: Peppermint, lemon balm, basil, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, parsley, sage
• Spices: Cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, fresh ginger, cloves, vanilla bean
• Vegetables cucumber: Celery, fennel, carrots, cucumber
• Flowers: Lavender, rose petals, violet

Stylish picks include Fiji artesian water from the islands of Fiji – which is dressed with a hibiscus flower – and San Pellegrino sparkling water from Italy, which is bound to remind you of summer holidays!
Carry a bottle of water around with you – or keep one on your desk at work – and sip from it throughout the day. It will also keep you feeling energetic, less tired and help fill you up so you’re not tempted to snack so much.
Our skin is made of 64% water, so it’s crucial to hydrate it from the inside out - hydrated skin looks plumper and signs of ageing are less visible. It’s also a great way to get rid of breakouts and impurities.
Make drinking water part of your beauty regime: have a glass when you put your make-up on in the morning and take it off at night. (Top tip: A beautician will always know if their client is drinking enough water by simply touching their skin!)
