We gave schoolchildren a hands-on experience of what it’s like to work for us.
More than 1,000 children, aged 10-16, from more than 30 schools visited the Get Inspired Portsmouth careers event at the city’s Guildhall.
We showed them the work we carry out across the UK every day, ranging from installing fibre broadband and repairing copper cables to laying undersea cables and protection against cyber-attacks.
Colleagues from Consumer, Business and Public Sector, Technology, Service & Operations and our supply chain, and teams from Openreach set up a series of displays and mock street repairs. We even gave the children a glimpse inside one of our emergency control vehicles with its satellite communications.
Simon Howlett says: “It was a full-on day and we put on a good show. We gave the students an opportunity to consider whether an apprenticeship and telecoms career might be for them.
“We showed them a range of equipment to demonstrate how technology is rapidly progressing. And they were able to use their mobile phones to watch videos of how we install it. Many hadn’t appreciated that as they walk to school we have all this technology beneath their feet.”
Jacquie Jones from Solent Education Business Partnership, which organised the event, sent a message to say: “I would like to express my thanks to you and all your incredible staff for the effort and commitment at Get Inspired Portsmouth.”
