An amateur chef’s sideways take on cheese on toast resulted in more than a few crispy edges when they set fire to their kitchen.
Rather than slipping the quick and easy snack in the top of the oven, the inventive cook created a makeshift grill by turning a toaster on its side.
Unfortunately the hot sidewall of the toaster set the kitchen worktop alight in Croydon, South London, at just before 8.30pm on Thursday.
Norbury firefighters, who were called to the blaze, are warning people not to misuse their toasters in this way.
“Toasters are not designed to be put on their side and used to grill cheese on toast,” said crew manager Nick Morley.
“Not only does it generate heat onto the work surface as we saw at this incident but the dry leftover crumbs from the bottom of the toaster can get onto the hot elements and ignite.
“I never thought I’d have to give this advice as it’s painfully obvious but if you want cheese on toast use a grill not a toaster.”
The toaster was completely destroyed in the fire, which damaged the worktop but didn’t spread further.
The blaze was put out within 10 minutes.
