This classic shot of Diana, the Princess of Wales, was taken during a visit to India with Prince Charles in February 1992, and featured on numerous newspaper front pages the following day.

As photographer Martin Keene explains in the video above, the couple were expected to visit the Taj Mahal together, but Diana went on her own, leading to the defining image of the tour.

It was not unusual for VIPs to be photographed sitting alone on the bench – indeed,  the Prince himself had been shot there 12 years earlier – but the picture of Diana hinted at loneliness and isolation, and took on greater significance when the royal couple separated just a few months later.

The bench is still there, incidentally, and as is known as ‘Lady Di’s Chair’.
