What is Xbox One backwards compatibility?

It’s the ability for the Xbox One to play games originally made for both the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox console. Both consoles are older than the Xbox One – the Xbox 360 was released in 2005, and the original Xbox back in 2002. This means you can play a host of classic titles on your current console.

Can I play Xbox 360 and Xbox games?

At the moment it only plays Xbox 360 games. Games for the original Xbox will be available starting in the autumn of 2017. Xbox games run through an emulator, so you can use Xbox One features while playing.

How does Xbox One backwards compatibility work?

Instead of buying the games in the physical format of discs that come in boxes, you can download digital versions of certain games you’ve brought, much like you would download a film or song.

What about games I’ve bought on disc?

Some games in the backwards compatible list do still come on disc. In that case, you’ll need to insert the original disc into your Xbox One and the console will download it to the hard drive. You’ll still need to have the disc in the console in order to play the game.

What about multiplayer?

Yes, you’ll still be able to play with friends, provided they own the game on Xbox 360.

It’s free to play games you own – as long as they are on the backwards compatible list of games.

If you don’t own the games you can buy them, some are free, while some can cost as much as £29.99. Some also have a range of extras you can buy, like more levels. These are generally fairly cheap, about a pound or two, but again can go up into double figures.

Which games are available for Xbox One backwards compatibility?

Xbox has issued a full list of games. At the moment, it consists of a huge variety of titles, including The Walking Dead, Screamride, Batman: Arkham Origins, Metal Gear Rising: Vengeance, Lego Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider Underworld, Shinobi, Dead Space 3 and Army of Two. But new titles are being added all the time.
