    Price: £40

    Website: Belkin

This great-value bag is ideal if you’ve got a larger laptop: it’ll take up to a 17-incher, so is perfect for designers who need the extra screen real estate.

Made from polyester/nylon, it has a removable pouch for your power supply, so your plug won’t scratch your laptop’s screen, and there are extra compartments for everything from pens to credit cards.

It’s comfy too, thanks to the padded straps, and the back has a breathable mesh, which you’ll appreciate – with the weight of a 17-inch laptop on your back.

There’s even a hole for your headphone cable to pass through to stop it getting tangled in the straps. Belkin has thought of everything.

  • Chrome Sentinel backpack

    Last updated: 12 January 2017, 15:16 GMT

    Price: £110

    Website: Chrome, Always Riding

This bag is a stripped down version of one used by bike couriers, so you know it will be up to the task.

Hardwearing and compact, it’s expandable from 16 to 24 litres via the weatherproof flap pack.

You’ll fit up to a 15-inch laptop in the pocket, though there’s not much padding, so it may be wise to pay extra for Chrome's truck tarp liner padded sleeve (£30). Then your machine will take anything you can throw at it.

The backpack includes a single shoulder strap and sternum strap helping to distribute the load evenly, with the foam back ensuring comfort and breathability – handy if you’re on your bike.

    Last updated: 12 January 2017, 15:16 GMT

    Price: £225

    Website: Property Of

For a more dapper approach to lugging your laptop around, check out the Property Of… range of bags.

This backpack/briefcase combo is made of waxed canvas, with leather handles and trim, giving it a real premium feel.

The shoulder straps can be used as a single strap, so you can carry it across your body like a more traditional laptop bag, should you wish.

It’ll hold any machine up to 15-inches, and the main compartment has a flap cover with buckle fastening.

The only problem is you might need a nicer laptop to match this snazzy bag.

  • Targus Rolling Laptop Backpack black
    Joe Svetlik
    Last updated: 12 January 2017, 15:16 GMT

    Price: £65

    Website: Targus

If you are simply too tired to carry your bag any more, you can take this backpack off and roll it along the floor on its in-line skate wheels. Which is handy if you’ve just got off a plane and passport control is a long walk.

A two-tier telescoping locking handle means you can steer it with ease, too.

It’s a doddle to switch between roller and backpack modes – a rear flap conceals the shoulder straps when it’s a roller, and covers the wheels when it’s on your back.

The laptop compartment includes a protective lining, fitting up to a 15.4-inch model, and is removable.

  • Vaude JaPETus backpack

    Last updated: 12 January 2017, 15:16 GMT

    Price: £70

    Website: Vaude

That odd capitalisation is because this bag is made of recycled PET bottles. (And Japetus is the name of one of Saturn’s moons, if you were wondering.)

Anyway, onto the features – this bag is weatherproof, thanks to a rain cover, so if the heavens open on your way home from work, you’re covered. Literally.

It’ll take up to a 15.6-inch laptop, and has a sternum strap and removable hip belt to keep it secure. Plus various slide-in pockets and zip compartments make it easy to organise yourself.

Being made of recycled material, it’s also better for the environment than most.
