There's a new machine on the block and it goes by the name of Surface Laptop.

It's the latest addition to Microsoft's long-running Surface line of PCs, this time aimed at power-hungry users who value speed above everything else.

But is it the laptop for you? Find out below...

The Surface Laptop runs Windows 10 S

Windows 10 S

The Surface Laptop will be the first PC on the market to use Microsoft's new Windows 10 S operating system.

This new variant of Windows 10 is very much like the main version, except for one big difference - it only allows you to download apps from the Windows Store. This approach is said to improve two things: security and speed. All Windows Store apps are verified by Microsoft themselves and are optimised so that they use the very least amount of system space. Should you want to download other software, you'll have to pay to get the standard version of Windows 10.

The Surface Laptop is incredibly fast

As mentioned, speed is a big deal on the Surface Laptop because it uses Windows 10 S to keep system usage to a minimum.

At a demo, Microsoft showed just how much this benefits the device, comparing it to a previous Surface when starting up. The Surface Laptop took just 15 seconds to switch on and sign in the user, which is pretty speedy indeed.

The Surface Laptop boasts a decent battery life

Battery life claims should always be taken with a pinch of salt until independently tested, but it's hard to ignore Microsoft's claim that the Surface Laptop can provide a whooping 14 hours of video playback.

That's quite a punch for such a small device weighing just 2.76 lbs and only 14.5mm thick – both lighter and thinner than many of its premium rivals.

The Surface Laptop is easy on the eyes and ears

As with all Surface devices, the Surface Laptop has a touch screen, housed on a 13.5-inch PixelSense Display. The bezel – the border around the screen area – is also one of the thinnest you will find.

In terms of sound, the Surface Laptop uses Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Audio Premium which is one of the leading sound experience standards around, helping to maintain volume levels and prevent distortion.

The Surface Laptop looks premium

The touch keyboard has a unique, smooth fabric coating which glides perfectly along your fingers.

This Alcantara fabric is cut by lasers around the keys, while the keys themselves are backlit.

In terms of colours, the Surface Laptop is available in platinum, graphite gold, cobalt blue and burgundy,

The Surface Laptop has a choice of connectivity options

The Surface Laptop features a USB 3 port to transfer data fast, a mini DisplayPort output, an SD card reader, a headphone jack, as well as Bluetooth.

The Surface Laptop is available at a variety of spec and price points

The Surface Laptop will go on sale on June 15 but pre-orders are being taken straight away.

There is a choice of four spec and price options, starting from £979 for the Intel Core i5 option with 128GB of storage space, 4GB of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 620.

The highest option comes in at £2,149 with an Intel Core i7 processor, 512GB of storage space, 16GB of RAM and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.
