No matter how well you look after your laptop, there’s always a risk it could be lost or stolen. Thankfully, Microsoft has added a new feature in Windows 10 that could help ease your mind - Find My Device.

Such a feature has been around for several years on smartphones, but this is the first time Microsoft has made something like it available for laptops as well.

It’s not guaranteed to find a lost laptop, but it is well worth turning on – just in case the worst happens.

You’ll need to be signed in with a Microsoft account – you can find out how Microsoft accounts work by reading our guide here.

It works for any device using Windows 10, so this can include smartphones and tablets as well. Best of all, it’s free to use. So what are you waiting for?

Not using Windows 10? We've got another way you can track down your laptop right here.

How does the Find My Device feature work?

To use Find My Device, you need to be connected to your Windows 10 laptop with a Microsoft account, and need to have Find My Device and Location switched on.

When these are active, your computer periodically sends out the location of your device to your online Microsoft account, where you can see its most recent location on a map.
