No matter how well you look after your laptop, there’s always a risk it could be lost or stolen. Thankfully, Microsoft has added a new feature in Windows 10 that could help ease your mind - Find My Device.
Such a feature has been around for several years on smartphones, but this is the first time Microsoft has made something like it available for laptops as well.
It’s not guaranteed to find a lost laptop, but it is well worth turning on – just in case the worst happens.
You’ll need to be signed in with a Microsoft account – you can find out how Microsoft accounts work by reading our guide here.
It works for any device using Windows 10, so this can include smartphones and tablets as well. Best of all, it’s free to use. So what are you waiting for?
Watch the video for full details and read our guide below:
How does the Find My Device feature work?
To use Find My Device, you need to be connected to your Windows 10 laptop with a Microsoft account, and need to have Find My Device and Location switched on.
When these are active, your computer periodically sends out the location of your device to your online Microsoft account, where you can see its most recent location on a map.
How do I set up Find My Device?
You need to be signed in to a Microsoft account on a Windows 10 laptop to use Find My Device – you’ll use the same account later if you need to track it.
To set up Find My Device on your laptop:
1: Go to the Start Menu and click Settings.
2: Click Update & security.
3: In the left-hand menu, select Find My Device.
4: Find My Device should be off. Click the Change button below.
5: A box will appear saying ‘Save my device’s location periodically’ – click the slider so it says On.
Your laptop will now begin sending out your device’s location to your Microsoft account. In order for it to work you need to turn Location on, which is explained below.
How do I switch on Location?
Location is found in the Action Center, which is the small icon shown below in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Click it and you will see one of the buttons which says Location. If it’s on already, it will be lit or coloured, otherwise it’ll be faded like most of the others.
How do I use Find My Device?
To find a device, you have to go to http://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in to the Microsoft account you have assigned to your laptop.
If you have several Windows devices, you’ll have to find your laptop among the list. On the right, you’ll see the last time it was ‘seen’ with a link below, Find my device.
Following the link will give you more details and, most importantly, a map showing your device’s last recorded location. The location will update if it’s connected to wi-fi.
