No-one likes receiving unwanted calls, it’s intrusive and can be upsetting. Some fraudsters will even claim to be calling from BT. But don’t worry, there are things you can do to stay safe.
We take scams very seriously and want you to feel empowered to deal with them. So our webpage www.bt.com/scams includes advice on how to spot a scam call and provides an easy way to report them.
What is a scam call?
There are different types of scam which you can learn more about at Take Five to Stop Fraud – a Government-backed initiative to fight fraud.
If you get an unsolicited phone call asking for personal or financial information or access to your computer, it might be a scam.
One type of scam call involves someone pretending to be from a well-known company – like BT – to try and con you out of money. They’ll try various tricks to try and get personal information from you and may become threatening, but don’t worry, you are in charge of your phone.
We’ll never call out of the blue and:
- Tell you that your service has been hacked
- Try to remotely take control of your device
- Tell you we’ve found a problem with your computer
- Ask you for an urgent payment and threaten to disconnect your service
- Ask for payment details to activate Caller Display, Call Protect or any of our free services.
What do I do if I get scam call?
Stay calm and don’t give out any information.
If you don’t give out your personal or payment details, they can’t access your bank or BT account, So if you’re not sure, just put down the phone. Remember you're in control.
