Microsoft is bolstering its operating system offering with a brand new variant of Windows 10.

Windows 10 S is the company's brand new take on the operating system, which already boasts more than 400 million, mainly aimed at speed-hungry learners.

What is Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S in a new variant of the Windows 10 operating system. It works pretty much the same as the main Windows 10 Pro version, with a few differences to enhance performance.

What is the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S only allows apps from the Windows Store. This has a number of advantages to the machine's performance, principally that Microsoft verify all apps so they're incredibly safe. Secondly, it's less demanding on the system so it works faster and uses less power. In fact, you should be able to have your machine on and running within 15 seconds on Windows 10 S.

The full Office suite is being made available on the Microsoft Store so that you are still able to use the likes of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Other than this, Windows 10 S behaves exactly the same as Windows 10.

Why has Microsoft made Windows 10 S?

Microsoft has decided to make a streamlined version of Windows 10 to cater mainly to the education sector. As schools increasingly use computers and tablets to teach, the ability restrict downloads to the Windows Store and the speed benefits from it mean that pupils can quickly start up machines and get on with tasks without any lagging. As an incentive, Microsoft is making Windows 10 S available to schools already using Windows 10 Pro for free, with free Office 365 for education.

Although it is mainly aimed at the education sector, Windows 10 S will still be available to all interested.

What if there's an app I want that isn't available on the Windows Store?

If you buy a Windows 10 S device you will be able to pay to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro – this will enable you to run your PC like a normal Windows 10 machine.

How do I get Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S will only be available on new machines you buy. Microsoft has partnered with a number of manufacturers such as Dell and Asus to produce inexpensive laptops that will run Windows 10 S very soon.

What are the alternatives to Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S will serve as a direct competitor to the Google Chrome OS, which is found on the Chromebook.

As it is available out of the box on new machines, it won't cost you any extra.
