What is the Nest Learning Thermostat?

It’s a thermostat, but not as we know it. Unlike standard manual thermostats, this is a smart thermostat that connects wirelessly to your home wi-fi network. That means you can control it using the app on your smartphone or tablet, or just by speaking to a smart speaker like Amazon Echo or Google Home.

What can the Nest Learning Thermostat do?

Nest Learning Thermostat can control your heating like a standard thermostat, adjusting the temperature by small or large increments as you choose. As the name suggests, it can also learn your routine – this means it can heat the house to your ideal temperature when you’re home and power down when you’re out, redicing your energy costs.

How to install the Nest Learning Thermostat?

Nest recommends professional installation of the Learning Thermostat, you can find detailed instructions here.

If you want to install it, Nest has created the following video, which takes you through the process.

How does the Nest Learning Thermostat work?

Like other smart home equipment, it uses your home wi-fi network to access the internet and communicate wirelessly with other smart home devices. That means you can control it with voice-activated smart speakers.

Does the Nest Learning Thermostat save you money?

It does. Because it learns when you’re out and doesn’t turn the heating up then, it should use less energy than a less advanced thermostat. And less energy usage means lower bills. It learns about your home too, and how it warms up and cools down, so it knows when to start heating up to reach the desired temperature at the desired time, and when to start cooling to avoid overshooting.

Because you can control it from your smartphone, you can turn it down when you are running late and turn it on when you need it, so it isn't on needlessly.

There’s a handy visual aid, too. When you turn your Nest down to an energy efficient temperature, you’ll see a little green leaf appear on the screen. That way, you know you’re being energy efficient, saving yourself money and doing the planet good all at once.

How do you use the Nest Learning Thermostat?

Because it programmes itself, it requires minimal setup. You need to connect it to your wi-fi network, download the Nest app, create a Nest account and follow the instructions to add it to your account.

Once you've done that, it's very simple to use. In fact, just start using it and after the first couple of days it will get to know your desired temperatures. To adjust the temperature, just turn the dial.
