Keeping your web browser up to date is an essential part of your PC’s life. Not only do you gain new features that developers have been working hard on, you also improve performance.
But security and safety is by far the most important reason why you should update your web browser regularly to ensure that you can surf the internet with peace of mind.
Developers are constantly keeping an eye on their web browsers to ensure they’re as airtight as possible, but as years go by older browsers will eventually be neglected. From January 12 2016, all versions older than Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be supported by Microsoft, meaning there will be no more crucial updates to safeguard your internet experience.
The exception is IE 9, which is still supported for Vista SP2.
Does it affect my PC?
This change affects all versions of Windows except Windows 10 which already comes with the latest version of IE 11.
However, IE 11 is only available to machines using Windows 7 or higher, meaning those on older machines will have to find an alternative to remain safe. For more information, check out our feature: Microsoft is killing IE 8,9,10. What does it mean for you?
And if you still need convincing, read our piece on 7 reasons why you need to upgrade to Internet Explorer.
When you’re ready to upgrade, follow the steps set out below – be warned they could vary slightly if you’re downloading from a different web browser:
How to install Internet Explorer 11
1: First you need to visit this webpage to download IE11.
2: Below the Get Internet Explorer 11 button you’ll see a ticked box marked ‘I would also like Bing and MSN defaults’. This will make Bing your default search engine and MSN your homepage. 4: The installation will then continue on its own. Once it’s complete you may need to restart, so click Restart Now.
5: When your PC resumes, your Internet Explorer 11 browser will be ready to use.
