The Apple App Store launched this week in 2008 and now has well over 1.4 million apps across 24 categories.
Having this number of apps ready for download is great, but it can also make it quite difficult to find the best app for any given task.
Thankfully Apple has added features to the App Store to help you sort the wheat from the chaff and there are some great websites with good reviews that can also help you narrow down your search.
Check out the video above to find out more.
Tip 1: See what's popular
The best place to start when looking for apps is undoubtedly the Top Charts section of the App Store. To get there all you have to do is open the App Store on your iPad and then tap on the Top Charts icon at the bottom of the screen. This shows an overall view of the most popular apps across Paid, Free and Top Grossing categories.
However you can also drill down further by tapping on Categories on the top left of the screen and selecting a sub genre such as Kids to see popular apps for children.
Tip 2: Let the experts help you choose
As the sheer volume of iPhone and iPad apps grew Apple realised it needed a way of pointing users towards what it believes to be the best new apps, so it added the Featured section to the App Store.
To access it just tap on the Featured star icon at the bottom left of the App Store. This shows you a curated list of some of the best new apps as well as popular old stalwarts, available across a range of categories.
You'll also find apps that have been awarded an Editor’s Choice rating, as well as games that are new and exclusive to the iPad.
Tip 3: Check out App Collections
Apple also uses the Collections section of the App Store to suggest good quality apps to you. These are apps that have been grouped together into themes such as Apps for Shopping, Apps for Writers and Social Networking.
Find these collections by tapping on the Featured star icon at the bottom left of the App Store scroll down to the very bottom to Quick Links and tap iPad Collections
Tip 4: Use good old fashioned search
Of course, you don't have to rely on others to surface apps for you; you can just search for them yourself. Apple has also provided tools to help you hone down your search to zero in on the best apps. Enter a search term into the box in the top right hand corner of the App Store and then tap on the Search button. To hone your search tap on the drop-down boxes on the top row. For example, if you change Any Price to Free, you'll see only free apps and you can also change By Relevance to By Rating to see the highest rated apps shown first in the list.
Tip 5: Read online reviews and app websites
There are lots of great websites around where you can review reviews of new and interesting apps and find out which apps are currently on sale at a reduced price. There are good quality reviews of iPad games available from Pocketgamer.co.uk and the iOS section of Metacritic, while sites such as AppShopper and App Spy are worth checking out for news on price drops or paid-for apps.
Tip 6: Use apps to discover other apps
There are a number of apps available on the App Store that are designed to help you discover new apps you might want to download or to find paid-for apps that are now free. A good example is AppFlow.
