Many of us rely on mobile phones for our work and personal lives and it’s incredibly important to be able to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues.

There may be occasions when you have patchy mobile signal, either at home or work. It can be exasperating when you can’t make calls or people can’t get hold of you when they need to, so we’ve introduced a new, free service to help BT Mobile customers called Wi-Fi Calling.

What is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling lets you make calls and send texts using your wi-fi network.

This means if you have signal problems – particularly inside buildings where there may be blackspots – you can continue to make calls and send messages. You don’t need to download an app to use it – just switch it on and connect to wi-fi and use your phone as normal.

Where can I use Wi-Fi Calling?

You can use Wi-Fi Calling on any wi-fi network in the UK.

Does Wi-Fi Calling cost anything extra?

No. As long as your phone is compatible, BT Mobile won’t charge you anything extra to use Wi-Fi Calling.

Wi-Fi Calling doesn’t use any of your data either: calls and texts come out of your existing monthly allowance.

How do I get Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling is available to all new and existing customers if your handset is compatible (see below). From March 27th, you can switch it on in your phone to start using it, as explained in the videos below.

What phones does Wi-Fi Calling work on?

To use Wi-Fi Calling you will need a compatible handset.

All iPhone models from the 5S onwards will be compatible. This includes the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ bought from BT Mobile will also work with Wi-Fi Calling. We’ll be announcing more compatible phones in the future.

If you are on a handset plan and your phone isn’t compatible, you can upgrade to one that is. Check out BT Mobile’s phone range here.

How do I know if my phone is compatible with Wi-Fi Calling?

You can check it using the My BT app or the BT Mobile app.

  • My Mobile: Log in to bt.com/mymobile. Go to the Phone and SIM section and look for Wi-Fi Calling. It will say ‘Compatible’ if you can use the feature.
  • BT Mobile app: Open the app and scroll down to ‘Phone Connectivity’. If there’s a Yes next to Wi-Fi Calling you can use it.

How do I use Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling is incredibly easy to set up, it doesn’t need an app, simply turn it on in your phones settings. Below are instructions for using it on Apple and Android phones.

iOS:

1: Check your software is up to date. Go to Settings – General – Software Update.
