Changing energy supplier is now even easier thanks to new rules forcing companies to display a QR code at the top of every bill.

Consumers will be able to scan the codes using free apps such as uSwitch’s new ‘Compare, Switch and Save’ app to find cheaper electricity and gas suppliers.

Using information about the customer’s current tariff, energy consumption and their area, the app instantly shops around for alternative suppliers, which could save households hundreds of pounds.

According to research by uSwitch, only 8% of us actually use the information on our energy bills to compare or switch supplier, with 18-34 year olds among the least confident at understanding their energy bills.

The new app not only finds the cheapest possible tariff but also provides a step-by-step guide through the switching process which can be carried out directly within the app. It will also alert you whenever a fixed deal is ending or another cheaper energy plan becomes available.

“The introduction of QR codes to bills will allow bill payers to compare energy deals more accurately and switch suppliers at the touch of a phone or tablet; it is great to see comparison sites like uSwitch embrace it,” said Lord Bourne, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Energy and Climate Change.

“We will continue to work closely with energy suppliers and comparison websites to ensure the services they provide meet the needs of British bill payers, so they can get the best price that works for them.”
