Tesco has revealed it will not be releasing a successor to the popular Hudl 2 Android tablet.

The original Tesco Hudl tablet launched in September 2013 and was a surprise hit, selling 750,000 units. It was followed by the acclaimed Hudl 2 in October 2014.

If the company were to follow a similar product lifecycle, we’d be expecting the Hudl 3 to be announced any day now. But, Tesco informs us, there’s no successor on the way.

“We continue to sell our Hudl 2 and it remains a popular device with our customers,” a Tesco spokesperson told BT.com. “We have no current plans to release a Hudl 3.”

We were big admirers of the two tablets, particularly the Tesco Hudl 2, which was far superior to its processor, having a bigger screen and a faster, more powerful processor.

It was (and is) one of the best budget tablets – and as you can read in our Tesco Hudl 2 review, we felt it was a great choice for first-time tablet users.

Priced £129 on launch, Tesco customers could get it for £65 by using Clubcard Boost, making it an even more enticing prospect.

Marketing Magazine reports that several members of the Hudl team no longer work with Tesco – and the company is certainly going through a different period at the moment.  In January it sold Blinkbox for £5 million and announced 43 store closures. This month, its profits were down 55% from the same period in 2014, falling from £779 to £354 million.

In good news, Tesco Hudl 2 is still available on Tesco.com. In bad news, it sounds like it could be the last Hudl we see…
