Oral-B has announced a new electric toothbrush which works with your smartphone to help you brush your teeth properly.
According to Oral-B, 80% of people don’t spend enough time brushing all the areas of their mouth properly and 60% don’t brush the back molars at all.
To correct these bad brushing habits, Oral-B has introduced the Genius, an electric toothbrush that works with a smartphone app to track where you brush and let you know if you are brushing in the right areas.
Motion sensors built into the brush work with your smartphones camera to track different areas of the mouth, what Oral-B is calling ‘Position Detection Technology.’
While brushing you get real-time feedback from the Oral-B app which shows which zone you need to concentrate your brushing in.
Dr Jose Nart, a doctor of dental surgery in Barcelona, says the toothbrush will ensure people brush at the right pressure, for the right time and in the right area.
“The Oral-B Genius and App take digital guidance to the next level by bringing awareness to what’s actually happening each time users brush and giving them real-time guidance to improve every brushing session,” he said.
Over time you’ll learn which zones need attention and your brushing should become more efficient.
Powered by a lithium-ion battery that lasts two weeks per charge, the brush comes with a phone holder you attach to a mirror to ensure the camera is in the right place to monitor brushing. There’s also a travel case and charger with a single plug that charges both the brush and smartphone.
The Oral-B Genius isn’t the first connected toothbrush. In 2014 Oral-B introduced the SmartSeries with built-in Bluetooth that connected to a smartphone, so you could view brushing activity and get feedback on your brushing technique.
The Oral-B Genius will launch in July. There’s no news yet on pricing or exact UK availability.
