Twitter is replacing its infamous egg avatar in a bid to change the default picture’s link with trolls.

The default profile picture, given to all new users until they upload a personalised one, will now be a gender-neutral silhouette of a person.

In a blog detailing the change, Twitter said: “We’ve noticed patterns of behaviour with accounts that are created only to harass others – often they don’t take the time to personalise their accounts.

“This has created an association between the default egg profile photo and negative behaviour, which isn’t fair to people who are still new to Twitter and haven’t yet personalised their profile photo.”

More thought has gone into the new design than you might imagine. Twitter says the head shape and width of body were specifically designed to look gender-neutral and the grey colour is to attract less attention than the bright background of the old egg avatar.

Twitter users reacted as expected to the news.

Mature as always.
