Yes, the Walkman is still very much around – and Sony has just unveiled two new music players, including one plated in gold.

The WM1Z comes with the ability to handle high resolution audio as well as more standard mp3 files.

It also comes with five listening modes depending on the type of music – standard, female vocal, male vocal, percussion and strings.

As well as wired listening, the new Walkmans come with Bluetooth compatibility so you can pair them with your wireless headphones.

There’s a four-inch display and 30-hour battery life, too.

There’s a black version of the Walkman, but its the gold-plated device which naturally catches the eye.

It’s surprisingly heavy in the hand, weighing around 455g, so it’s certainly robust.

The chunky side buttons look and feel like a cool tech throwback.

However, the gold-plating comes at a price. There’s no confirmed UK figure yet, but it’s set to cost 3,300 euro – which is about £2,800.

It’s certainly quite a statement – and it sounded very good when we tried it with Sony’s new wireless headphones – but it’s also quite an investment.
