Back-up and share your photos with BT Cloud on your mobile

We're taking more photos than ever thanks to the powerful cameras on our smartphones. Here's how to keep those memories safe, even if your phone is lost, broken or stolen.

Smartphones have changed the way we take pictures. Where we only used to take cameras on holiday or on days out, most of us now have a camera with us all the time, giving us a quick and powerful tool to capture those all-important moments, whether that’s a family Christmas, an holiday vista or an opportune selfie.

Keeping those images safe is just as important however, which is why every BT customer gets BT Cloud storage included for free. By using the BT Cloud app on your phone or tablet, you can quickly and easily back up your photos and videos so if your device is lost, broken or stolen, you won't lose your memories.

How to back up your photos on BT Cloud

BT Cloud is your own personal space on the internet for storing your photos, videos and files. Think of it as a virtual safe which lets you keep everything secure across all your devices.

Depending on the broadband package you have the space you have available will be either 10GB, 20GB or 1,000GB.

To get started, simply follow these steps:

1. Download the BT Cloud App

First make sure your phone has plenty of battery life and that you have a strong wi-fi connection.

Tap on the App Store icon on your home screen and then type in ‘BT Cloud’ in the search bar on the bottom right-hand side of the app. Tap the download icon and the app will start downloading.

Tap on the Google Play Store icon on your home screen. Now tap on the search bar at the top of the app and type in ‘BT Cloud’. Tap the install icon and the app will start downloading.

2. Sign in and sync your photos

Sign in using your BT ID and password. You will then be asked to give BT Cloud permission to access your photos, videos and your location (don’t worry this simply tells the phone when to backup - BT doesn’t store or collect your location).

You will then be asked what types of content you would like to backup including: Contacts, Photos, Video. You will also see the option for Auto Backup. This last feature will periodically upload your latest photos to the BT Cloud in the background.

3. Choose to sync over wi-fi or mobile data

The BT Cloud app lets you choose how you want to upload your photos: either using your phone’s mobile data plan as well as over wi-fi or only when it’s connected to a wi-fi network.

The first option offers greater convenience, but it will use a lot of data so if you choose this option, make sure that your mobile phone data plan is at least 20GB or more per month.

Tap the Menu icon in the top left-hand side of the app the tap on the word Settings. Now tap on How To Back UpYou can then choose either: WiFi Only or WiFi + mobile network.

4. Create a daily/weekly backup schedule

If you’d rather back up your photos at regular intervals, then the app can remind you to do so either every day or each week.

Simply go to Settings then tap on When to Back Up and, using the dial, select the day and time that you’d like to be reminded.

5. Manually upload photos

Of course you don’t have to upload all your photos and instead you can simply manually upload only the photos that you want saved to the cloud.

To do this tap on the three dots in the top right-hand side of the screen and then tap on Upload photos and videosFrom there you can choose Photos & videosjust Photos or just Videos.

6. Create your own album

Now you’ve got your photos safely backed up to BT Cloud you can organise them by creating your own albums within the app.

At the bottom of the screen you’ll see three options: All, Albums and FavouritesSelect Albums and then tap on New Album.

Give the album a name and then start selecting the images that you want included by simply tapping on them. Once you’ve selected all the images that you want to back up, tap on Done.

7. Share your photos

With your photos backed up and organised into albums it's easy to then share them with your friends and family.

Go to the album you want to share, and then tap on the three dots in the right-hand corner and tap Select All or Select if you want to manually choose the photos.

You'll notice a new icon has now appeared at the top of the screen, tap on this Share icon and it'll create a link that anyone can use to access the pictures. You can now either copy the link or share it via message, WhatsApp or email.

It's important to note that the link generated is a public link, which means that anyone can use it to see the photos you've chosen to share.
